Partly due to my graduation from the Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, however, I also teach (Brown University 1970-75), and have observed the liberal arts curriculum on the ground (Brown University) It is my belief that it is important to integrate education and the study of art into other subjects. That's not so surprising for the ethnomusicologist (MA 1967, PhD at UCLA)! The ethnomusicology program that was my first at UC Berkeley (from 1975-1976) sits comfortably in a department of music at a College of Letters and Science. It's great to be involved in several passions. It is also fun to see the larger view. I really enjoy teaching, both undergraduates (majors as well as non-majors and for which I've composed three textbooks: Music in India A Study of Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically and Music in Japan: Experiencing the Music of Japan, expressing Culture) as well as graduate students. And I alternate periods when I pursue primarily professorial activities in addition to periods of administrative responsibilities to the mix (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-98, Chair The Deans of the College of Letters and Science 1994-98, Chairperson of the Group for Asian Studies Since 1999, and is now the Chair of the Department of Music again).
